Indigenous and natural materials integrate with clean simple lines, putting a fresh new face on West Coast Contemporary. The clients enjoy extensive wine knowledge, and a climate controlled, well planned cellar to house their impressive collection was paramount in the design process. The clients are also avid cooks, and the kitchen provides a comfort zone for chefs of every caliber. Although an open concept, the dining area is given separation from the main living area by a wall of fir slats that add interesting layers of texture through both the materials as well as the interesting shadow lines it creates throughout the day. The slat element is repeated on the stair railings and another wall. An important collection of Aboriginal art was a fundamental consideration throughout the design process. The oversize windows bring the West Coast inside. Polished concrete floors echo the hues of nature just outside the windows. A wall of stacked charcoal slate enveloped in Douglas Fir provides a back drop for a wood burning stove, used as an alternate heat source - essential on a wild coast that experiences many nature driven power outages.
