March 2011

2010 CHBA Awards

We are really honoured to have won gold for our Oak Bay Renovation in all three levels of the CHBA Awards this year: the SAMS (National), the Georgies (Regional/Provincial) and the CARE Awards (Local). We are pleased to have received this recognition for an outstanding project, and we thank our clients for allowing us to enter their project. Keep your eye out for the feature article on this home in the April edition of Western Living. For now check out
this article in the Vancouver Sun.

ART IN BLOOM – is just about here!

The installation will be on display March 28 – April 2 at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
Come check it out! All proceeds benefit the AGGV.

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement

“Our interpretation of “Marie Feeding the Calves” is an abstract three dimensional deconstruction of the original piece. It is an interactive, technological interface of form, texture and rhythm, drawn from elements of the painting…

…we reference humanity’s interventions and interferences with the natural world: technology is now responsible for sustaining the environment, as Marie is responsible for her calves. Similarly, in our own line of work, we must be accountable for the materials we use and the environments that we affect, while nurturing and protecting the resident in more than simply a structural way.”

Very special thanks to the following contributors of expertise and materials:

Paul Cosgrove (Zebra Construction)
James Scott, Green Roof Professional (Force of Nature Landscaping)
Peter Pardell
& Jules Hoedeman (Pardell Electric)
Robert Turner (Robert Turner Decorative Finishes)

Island View Nursery – plants
Oak Bay Parks Department and The Beech House (East Sooke) – for blossoming branches
McLaren Lighting – lighting fixtures

We will host an opening event for the Dirty Wall show at a future date when Kane is back from India and will be able to join us. Do come around to the office anytime and take a look at his beautiful work!

Welcome to 2011

January 2011

Welcome to 2011! We have had a great start to the year, with numerous projects initiated in the Design end of our business, and in Construction as well. We are excited about the growth of relationships with our new clients and are pleased to welcome back a number of previous clients again. We are happy to have the opportunity to help them all achieve their goals for their homes and properties!

In December we saw the successful Grand Opening of Timeless Toys at their new location in Oak Bay. Lorin Turner, Rus Collins and Abstract Developments turned this project around on a very tight timeline in order to open in time for an exciting holiday season for kids and adults alike.

Rus and Lorin are currently collaborating on a project called Art In Bloom, a fundraiser for the Art Gallery on display from March 27 - April 2. They are doing a living installation piece that is an interpretation of a classical painting they were presented with by the event organizers.

A number of local designers, local and international artists, botanists and floral arrangers are participating in the event, presenting lectures and hosting workshops, and designing other installation pieces, all following a theme of celebration of the arrival of spring, blossoms, fine art...

Here’s a link to the AGGV event, and there’s a wrap-up Gala Event on April 2nd at the Atrium at Parkside Resort called “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.” We’ll get photos up when the installation goes in, but be sure to check out the variety of events.
